School Meals, Food and Drink

Drinks

We encourage all children to drink water throughout the day and children should bring a named water bottle each day (at Luston your child will be provided with a water bottle in their house team's colour). Please do not put water bottles in reading bags as they can often leak.

Milk can also be provided and is free for children up until their fifth birthday. After this you have the opportunity to pay for milk. Please ask at the school office for details.

Snacks

Luston & Shodon are Healthy Schools and promote the eating of healthy foods.

Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are provided with a piece of fresh fruit every day. We invite all children to bring in a healthy snack for morning break.

Children at both Luston and Shobdon enjoy 'Tuckshop Tuesday' where all children are able to purchase a healthy snack for just 50p.

Children at Luston are also able to purchase a snack from the 'Friday Snack Shack' for just 50p. The money raised from the snack shack helps to support our Cultural Enrichment programme.

Hot Lunches

At Luston and Shobdon Schools we provide healthy and nutritious cooked school meals. At Luston these are provided by Orleton Kitchens, and at Shobdon by Donna at Wigmore High School. Additives and processed food is avoided, fried foods, high quantity sugar products and confectionery in puddings are also restricted.

Meals need to be ordered in advance, the latest copy of the menu can be found below.

Lunches are provided daily from the school hall where children are able to enjoy the meal they have chosen, whilst developing their social skills as they talk and eat together. All children are also encouraged to eat with a knife and fork.

Free School Meals

Universal Infant Free School Meals

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to a free school meal each day. This is known as Universal Infant Free School Meals entitlement (UIFSM).

Free School Meals: Targeted and Expanded

Free school meals are also available to children if their parent/carer is in receipt of Universal Credits or certain other income related benefits. This is known as Free School Meal entitlement (FSM) and there are two categories of entitlement; Targeted and Expanded

  • Targeted: Those families in receipt of Universal Credits who also have a household income of £7,400 or less, qualify for Targeted Free School Meal status. This means that not only will the child will receive free school meals, but the school also receives some additional funding known as Pupil Premium. Children from these families will receive additional support with paying for school trips, daily milk, residential stays, school uniform and music lessons.
  • Expanded: Those families in receipt of Universal Credits with a household income in excess of £7,400 qualify for Expanded Free School Meal status. This allows children to access free school meals.

Eligibility Checks

Eligibility checks are carried out annually ahead of each new school year. However, if your circumstances change part way through the school year please do let us know so that we can run a mid-year eligibility check.

If you believe that your child may be eligible for Free School Meals, you can either request a form from the school office or use the link here: Application for free school meals - MyHerefordshire.
